Accessibility statement

The Safespace Association is committed to making this website usable by everyone, including people who rely on assistive technologies. We aim to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1, level AA.

How this site was built

This website was designed and built with the support of Claude Code, Anthropic's AI coding assistant, including an iterative accessibility review with automated and manual checks across both the light and dark themes.

What we've done

• Semantic HTML5 landmarks (header, navigation, main, footer) and a “Skip to content” link for keyboard users.
• A logical heading structure with no skipped levels, so screen-reader users can navigate by headings.
• Full keyboard operability. Every interactive element is reachable and operable from the keyboard, with a clearly visible focus indicator.
• Managed focus in the donation flow: when it moves from the form to the payment options to the confirmation, focus is moved to the new step and the thank-you is announced to screen readers.
• Colour contrast that meets WCAG AA, checked in both the light and dark themes.
• A light theme and a dark theme, plus a dyslexia-friendly reading mode (the OpenDyslexic typeface with increased letter, word and line spacing).
• Respect for the operating-system “reduce motion” preference. Animations and smooth scrolling are switched off when requested.
• Text alternatives for images and descriptive labels for icon-only buttons and every form field, with inline validation messages announced on submit.
• The full site available in English and German.
• Support for browser zoom up to 400% with text reflow and no loss of content or horizontal scrolling.

Conformance status

This site aims to conform to WCAG 2.1 level AA. It is an evolving project, and some third-party or embedded content may not yet be fully accessible.
